We am delinquent to the University or college of Cal for an appointВ ment to the Humanities Institute throughout summer of 1966 that enabled me to create part of this book. I wish to thank Faber and Faber, Limited., and Coward-McCann, Inc., intended for permission to quote by Lord from the Flies; I actually am happy to Faber and Faber, Ltd., and Harcourt, Brace, and Globe, Inc., intended for permission to quote in the Inheritors, Pincher Martin (first published in the United States as Both Deaths of Christopher Martin), Free Fall season, The Spire, and The PyraВ mid. The editors of Essays in Criticism as well as the Minnesota Review have kindly permitted me personally to use, in somewhat improved form, articles about Golding's work that I first posted in individuals journals: an element of the part on Pincher Martin origiВ nally came out under the subject " Around the Ending of Pincher Martin" in Works in Criticism, XIV (1964); and servings of the chapters on God of the Lures, The Inheritors, Pincher Martin, and Free Fall actually appeared within the title " Four Passages from Bill Golding's Fiction" in The MinВ nesota Review, V (1965). For expert typing, I actually am thankful to Mrs. Betty Becker, Mrs. Martha Gazlay, Mrs. Virginia McQuaid, Miss Drag into court Smith, and Miss Cathy Smith. For most hours of editorial function I was indebted to Richard A. McKee. Danger Adams, while my chairman at Irvine, has presented me specific support in various ways, while while scholar, vit, and person he has provided a continuing example for all of us inside the department. My own greatest debt, however , is to my wife and son, who have endured the writing of the book. HOWARD S. BABB

Introduction

With little preliminary ado, I shall examine in the fol lowing chapters the series of books that Bill Golding started publishing in 1954, for they seem to me extraordinary ebooks, more so than their general public reception would indicate. The first of all of them, Lord in the Flies, features proved simply by all possibilities the most successful, and Golding's fame will depend on it mainly. The Inheritors—rather oddly, I think—has never caught the population fancy. Pincher Martin is more widely known, attaining a certain prestige, indeed, due to the ending, which reveals the leading figure has in fact died near to the start of the story. But not Free Fall season nor The Spire, although published with some fanfare, has demonstrated anything like the benefit of Lord with the Flies to get the general reader, and undoubtedly The Pyramid does not apparently have captured his attention. Probably at present the body of Golding's work much more esteemed by critics than by the general public. Although Head of the family of the Lures has had its detractors —in part, My spouse and i suspect, precisely because of its well-known success —it has made a good deal of critical dicussion in the years as its publication, and...
